Tips for Safe Online Relationships December 11th, 2010

Online dating is becoming more and more popular as technology advances. People find they are able to have healthy and fulfilling relationships online now. If this sounds appealing to you, there are several things you should keep in mind to keep it safe.
Personal Information
Don’t post personal information such as your real name or phone numbers in your online profiles. You can exchange numbers later on after you’ve had the opportunity to chat online. It’s also a good idea not to link your primary email address to any online profiles. Most people suggest using a throw away email address that isn’t linked to your personal accounts in any way.
Exchanging Information
After you’ve chatted online and feel comfortable with the person, you can start to exchange small amounts of information. It’s always safer to use a cell phone over a land line when you are exchanging phone numbers. Cell phones can’t be as easily traced. You don’t want to give your whole life story away with in the first few months either.
Red Flags
There are several things to watch out for when you are dating online. Many scammers will use dating sites to find potential targets. Even if you feel that you know someone, don’t offer to send money for any reason if they ask, especially if you can’t afford to lose the money. If someone starts asking for personal information, such as birthdates or addresses, it’s a good idea to just leave them alone. Most dating sites have an age verification process you can go through so giving a birth date is unnecessary.
